history of record labels. part one

I decided on a whim to look on the history of different record labels and how they have helped artist get their music out to the public. I will list some of the artists they put out as well as when they started and in some case stopped producing artist.

according to Wikipedia
A record label is a brand or trademark associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. Often, a record label is also a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks; coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of new artists ("artists and repertoire" or "A&R"); and maintains contracts with recording artists and their managers. The term "record label" derives from the circular label in the center of a vinyl record which prominently displays the manufacturer's name, along with other information

1)Motown-was founded by berry gordy, jr. as tamla records on January 12, 1959, and incorporated as Motown record corporation on april 14,1960, in Detroit, Michigan.
during the 1960's, 79  records in the top ten of the billboard hot 100 record chart between 1960 and 1969.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motown  will give you the whole history and from the time berry gordy, jr sold Motown to MCA and boston ventures on june 28, 1988.

In order to avoid accusations of payola should DJs play too many records from the original Tamla label, Gordy formed Motown Records as a second label in 1959. The two labels featured the same writers, producers and artists.

Many more subsidiary labels were established later under the umbrella of the Motown parent company, including Gordy Records, Soul Records and VIP Records; in reality the Motown Record Corporation controlled all of these labels. Most of the distinctions between Motown labels were largely arbitrary, with the same writers, producers and musicians working on all the major subsidiaries, and artists were often shuffled between labels for internal marketing reasons. All of these records are usually considered to be "Motown" records, regardless of whether they actually appeared on the Motown Records label itself.

Check-Mate Records,Miracle Records,MoWest Records,Motown Yesteryear,Soul Records,V.I.P. Records,Weed Records were secondary R&B labels under Motown.

they also had Alternative genre labels, Independent labels distributed by Motown,

they covered country music, hip hop/rap,jazz,rock,latino and gospel. berry gordy was genius when it came to record labels and how he could have several records being played by djs without it all looking like they were from one label.

Columbia Records is an American flagship recording label, under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment, operating under the Columbia Music Group. It was founded in 1887, evolving from an earlier enterprise, the American Graphophone Company—successor to the Volta Graphophone Company.[1] Columbia is the oldest surviving brand name in recorded sound,[2][3][4] being the second major record company to produce recorded records.[5] Columbia Records went on to release records by an array of notable singers, instrumentalists, and bands. From 1961 to 1990, its recordings were released outside the U.S. and Canada on the CBS Records label (for Columbia Broadcasting System, its parent from 1938 to 1988) before adopting the Columbia name in most of the world. It is one of Sony Music's three flagship record labels with the others being Epic Records and RCA Records.

The Columbia Phonograph Company was founded by stenographer, lawyer and New Jersey native Edward Easton (1856–1915) and a group of investors. It derived its name from the District of Columbia, where it was headquartered.

As of October 2012, there are currently 85 recording artists signed to Columbia Records.
